Writing prompt – children

Children in the village of Sefrou in Morocco

A few years ago my wife and I toured Morocco for two weeks. It was a magical tour with many highlights. I write more about this trip on another site called Trevor’s Travels.

One of the places we visited on the tour was the village of Sefrou which is about 30km from Fes. It was a delightful and interesting place to experience. As we were wandering through the streets we came across this group of children playing. They seemed to want me to take their photo, but were a little hesitant at first. Eventually they posed for me.

Whenever I look at this photo I wonder what their story is. It might prompt one of my readers to think the same, or similar, question.

Writing prompt:

  1. Tell the story of this group of children.
  2. Use your imagination to think about what they were playing.
  3. Imagine being inside their heads. What were they thinking about this strange Australian taking their photo?
  4. Write about some imaginary tragedy they might have recently experienced.

Good writing.

    Hi Trevor
I am looking at joining a writers group in the Adelaide hills. Could you please tell me a little about the group you belong to and if there are any vacancies?
    Many thanks
    Jane

    Hi Jane,

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a question.

Joining a writers’ group is one of the best ways of not only improving your writing skills through having your work critiqued, but it can also spur you on to write on a regular basis, especially if the group sets a writing exercise or activity for every meeting. Amazing how a deadline can focus the mind and act as a motivator.

Sadly, I can’t invite you to the group I belong to which meets at Hahndorf. The group is a closed membership group consisting of current or former students and lecturers of Tabor College. At the end of 2012 there were significant changes in the creative writing staff there and it was inappropriate for us to continue meeting there. (One of our members, a current lecturer, has recently commenced another student based writers’ group at the college.)

A few years ago we actually had 3 groups running concurrently: prose, poetry and fantasy writers. As a recent MA graduate and then lecturer, I ran the poetry group.

All this doesn’t help you. There are several writers’ groups meeting in the Adelaide Hills or nearby suburbs. I suggest you go to the SA Writers’ Centre web page for details:

Attending regular seminars at the writers’ centre is also highly recommended.

    Hope this helps.
