Clare Valley writers festival 2013

THE WRITE WEEK

Clare Valley Writers’ week: bringing readers and writers together.

November 25th – December 1st 2013.

In recent days I have written about several other writers ‘festivals here in South Australia. Late in the year there is another one scheduled to be held in the Clare Valley in the mid-north of South Australia. This was my home town until we moved to Murray Bridge some 30 years ago. My daughter now lives in Clare, just around the corner from where she lived as a young girl.

This is the inaugural writers’ festival in the Clare area. It has much to offer and a great deal of potential. Here is another example of reading, writing, fine food and wine coming together to celebrate not only our finest writers – the line up of speakers is impressive – but also our great food and wine heritage.

I plan to be there. I may even enter several of the writing competitions which are now open.

Creative writing courses at Tabor Adelaide

A few years ago I completed my Master of Arts Creative Writing at Tabor Adelaide. You can read about my experiences by clicking on the appropriate category on the sidebar.

It was a difficult and challenging but immensely rewarding experience, something which has vastly improved my overall writing skills. As I write this Tabor is accepting enrolments for the coming semester which starts in July.

For more information on the courses, fees and enrolment procedures visit www.taboradelaide.edu.au or phone (08) 8373 8740 (in Australia). Many courses are now offered to external students, so geography is no barrier to success.

I can recommend the courses and those lecturing.

Good writing.

Langhorne Creek Writers’ Festival, South Australia

Langhorne Creek is one of the many wine growing districts of South Australia. It is less than a hour’s drive from the capital city Adelaide and even closer to my home town.

Wine and writing as well as wine and reading go hand in hand, one complementing the other.

So it is no surprise that the Alexandrina Council is supporting and promoting the Langhorne Creek Writers’ Festival to be held later this year.

There is also a writing competition but unfortunately this closes in a few days’ time; if you hurry you may get your entry in on time.

Dates: September 21 – October 19th

City of Salisbury Writers’ Festival 2013

As far as writers’ festivals in Australia, South Australia has led the way for decades. Writers’ Week has been an important and much loved  feature of the Adelaide Festival of Arts every two years since the 1970s. The festival and its Writers’ Week is now an annual event from this year. It is held in March when the weather here is often perfect for outdoor events such as the Writers’ Week.

In the last few years several other smaller festivals for writers have emerged in different parts of the state. Salisbury Writers’ festival is probably the leading one, and the one with the longest history. It is sponsored heavily by the City of Salisbury in the northern parts of the greater Adelaide metropolitan area. I attended on one day several years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the day.

There is an extensive programme of events and various competitions as well. Click on the website address to find out details.

Festival dates:  August 23rd to September 6th 2013

Writing prompt: the colour of spices

Colourful spices for sale in Fes, Morocco

In December 2011 my wife, daughter and I travelled extensively through magical Morocco. One of many interesting experiences was wandering through the medinas of the old parts of cities like Fes. The huge variety of things for sale was overwhelming, as were the sounds, aromas and the thronging crowds everywhere.

Such vibrant and exciting places. I wrote a great deal of poetry during our visit, along with an extensive daily journal.

Writing prompt: write about the foods you love, including the colours, aromas, textures and tastes. It could be in journal form, or poetry or even as a backdrop of a fictional piece, such as a short story.

Good writing.
